CSC Friday Night League
Cove Sailing Club's cruiser racing season got underway on Friday 1st May with 11 boats turning out to enjoy a great evenings racing in fine conditions. In the Whitesail league, 8 boats competed with Mystic finishing first on adjusted time ahead of Holy Grounder and Brightwings. CSC would like to welcome two new boats - Vincent Donnelly and crew on Ben Lui from Aghada and Noel Dunne with his crew on Wombat from the Naval Yacht Squadron who both did well on the night. Great to see the Whitesail league so well supported this early on in the season. It looks like this is set to be a very competitive season for the Whites with at least a few of the regular whiteboats due back over the next couple of weeks. In the Kites league, Re Eile finished first on adjusted time with Targeteer and Upstart in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Full results and League tables are available on the CSC website results pages here.
CSC would like to thanks to Adrian Tyler, Peter and Arther Kavanagh for helping with OD duties on Arthers boat Dasher Doyle and also Liam Allister, Sailing Secretary for all his hard work in getting the leagues set up ready for the start of the season and for OD'ing on the night. The Friday night league races will continue every Friday evening throughout the season until end of August. Please keep an eye on the Sailing program for OD duties.
CSC May League
The May League kicked off on Sunday 3rd May. CSC were delighted to welcome 3 boats from Dunmore East - Stagefright, Monkey Business, and Slack Alice who has returned to defend the titles they won last year, as well as Thunderbird from Crosshaven.
With swimmers in the channel off Cobh, the Grimaldi lines vessel leaving port, and the local ferry making its way across the line just before the start the crews had plenty to keep themselves occupied during the build up to the race. Despite all the activity the race started on time at 2.05PM opposite Kennedy Park Promenade and those on shore enjoyed a fine spectacle as the class 2 & 3 fleets passed Cobh under spinnaker on the run back from Whitepoint.
There was very competitive racing throughout the fleets. In class 2 Thunderbird took line honours only seconds ahead of Upstart although this result was reversed on adjusted time in both the ECHO and IRC divisions. In Class 3, Stagefright crossed the line ahead of Targeteer and Monkey Business taking 1st place in the class 3 IRC division, with Monkey Business taking 1st in the class 3 ECHO division. In the Whitesail league, Slack Alice and Holy Grounder battled each other all the way round the harbour with Holy Grounder eventually crossing the line in 1st place after a photo finish. On adjusted time the Whites race was won by C'est la vie, with Slack Alice in 2nd, and Holy Grounder in 3rd.
CSC would like to thank the race organisers - Kieran, John, Liam and Adrian and a special thanks to Martin Drake for the use of his rib. The May League continues each Sunday until 24th May. See you all next week.
Friday Night Leauge – Race 1 – 1st MAY 2009
A very promising start to the 2009 Friday night Cruiser racing with 11 boats coming to the start line.
Conditions were idealic with up tp 18kts of wind from the West and sunshine to boot. Liam Alister as OOD set up a fine course taking the fleet on a beat to No 9 .
The start line was keenly contested but without any ‘hackling’ - I suppose playing it ‘careful’ for now. There was a flooding tide so the majority of the fleet seemed to favour taking the ‘right’ side of the beat to the North and out of the channel , with a few boats staying on the ‘left’ side. Neither side seemed to pay off as the fleet stayed relatively even.
After No 9 there followed a close reach to No 13 where the fleets of the Royal Cork and CSC met in a scene akin to a ‘mid summer’ regatta. After No 13 an even closer reach to No 10, and then it was a ‘downhill’ run with the Kites shaking out the cobwebs on the Spinnys (and the crews!) and the ‘Whites’ keeping their concentration ( putting on the kettle? ) and maybe ‘driving’ up any Kites close by. The race finished at EF 1 after leaving No 11 to starboard.
A great start to the coming season, considering a few boats have still yet to launch / get ‘organised’.
