Update: SCORA AGM at Kinsale Yacht Club
Thanks to Claire Bateman who kindly sent us the below write up of the SCORA AGM:
Last Friday evening saw a very large attendance at Kinsale Yacht Club for the Annual General Meeting of SCORA. The extremely cold evening was no deterrent to the members who had come to enjoy what turned out to be a very interesting evening.
The members having been welcomed by Kinsale Vice Commodore Cameron Good, the meeting got under way with the first business of the evening being to elect a new Commodore. Vinnie O’Shea of Royal Cork Yacht Club was an unopposed unanimous choice and then took the chair. Jackie Kenefick of Schull Harbour Sailing Club was elected Executive Officer of the Association and Michael Murphy of RCYC and SHSC agreed to remain in his role of Treasurer and PRO. Also in attendance at the top table was Denis Kiely the hard working National Handicapping Officer.
The agenda item on class bands as was expected provoked lively input from the members, in fact the debate looked like going on for the evening such was the interest until the Chairman advised the members that he would shortly be calling a meeting with just one item on the agenda and that would be the class bands and handicapping.
A digital slide show of summer sailing was presented by Bob Bateman just before there was a break for refreshments and then the eagerly awaited presentation of trophies and prizes took place.
The prizes were presented by Sue McWilliam of McWiliam Onesails and Hugh Mockler of HM Yachts Ltd. and the SCORA prizes consisting of framed photographs from the 2010 sailing season were presented by the newly elected Commodore, Vinnie O’Shea.
There were some pics of Cove SC boats on view and all the photos can be seen on the Afloat.ie website by clicking on the image above.

ISAF TEAM RACING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SCHULL 2011
With the advent of 2011, preparations are now well under way for the holding of the ISAF Team World Racing Championships at Schull from August 27th, 2011 to September 23rd, 2011. It is a major triumph for the village of Schull, Co. Cork to host the World Championships . The organising committee on behalf of the Fastnet Marine and Outdoor Education Centre (FMOEC) was set up in 1997 and is an adjunct of Schull Community College and the facilities function under the auspices of the Cork County County Educational Committee. As Schull is a village community this event will be seen as a community undertaking and the Schull Development Association will be a co-operating organizing authority.
The event will be sailed in TR3.6 dinghies which are not too dissimilar to a firefly and 26 boats will be built locally at a cost of €5000.00 each. The hulls will be manufactured in Midleton and the sails will be built by the local sailmaker, Fastnet Sails, in West Cork. So far twelve boats have been sponsored. One of these has been sponsored by Schull Harbour Sailing Club where members have come up with a novel idea to sponsor a second boat. This is a one hundred club where members and their friends each contribute €50.00 towards the project.
Team Racing is a very popular branch of sailing where everything happens very quickly and there is no better school for tactical decision making and understanding of the rules with six boats at a time performing an intricate and aggressive dance where two teams of three race to try and achieve a winning combination of places – with the lowest score winning.
ISAF wish to invite 28 teams to participate at the event in August with teams coning from as far away as Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. with the host country having three teams. Teams are also expected from Italy, Japan, Poland, the U.K. France and Croatia.
Further information or queries regarding sponsorship for this exciting World Championship can obtained from Mr. Tim O’Connor, Principal, Schull Community College at timschull2011@gmail.com or Mr. David Harte, Manager, FMOEC at davidschull2011@gmail.com.
Schull is a unique part of Ireland for sailing and socialising. The scenery is breath taking, the sailing waters are magnificent, the reputation for organisation of major events is second to none and all our good wishes for the successful running of this major undertaking are with the organisers.

OneSails McWilliam SCORA Championships 2010
This years OneSails McWilliam SCORA Championships took place over the weekend with 2 races completed for all classes on Saturday in very light, flukey winds.
Ellida and True Pennace each took a first place in both IRC and ECHO with Endgame not far behind whilst in class 2 Yanks $ ffrancs got away from the fleet to take 1st places in IRC and ECHO in both races.
In class 3 IRC Wot Like won both races with Woody and Jay just behind. In class 3 ECHO it was wide open with Whyte Knight and Wot Like slightly ahead of Re Eile and Jay.
In class 4 IRC the two GK 24's Gaelic Kiwi and Granny Knot were neck and neck after each taking a win and in class 4 ECHO They were again neck and neck along with Thistle.
With everything to play for the conditions on Sunday proved more difficult and whilst classes 1 & 2 managed to get away on time and conclude their Championship, classes 3 & 4 had to be held back as what wind there was died away on the start line.
Patience eventually paid off and by about 2PM the wind picked up in the harbour enabling classes 3 & 4 to get underway.
Some close racing followed with Wot Like, Jay, Whyte Knight and Woody fighting for positions in class 3 whilst Gaelic Kiwi and Granny Knot battled for class 4 honors along with Thistle.
A summary of the results are below:
Class 1 IRC 1 Ellida 2 True Pennance 3 Endgame
Class 1 ECHO 1 Ellida 2 True Pennance 3 Endgame
Class2 IRC 1 Yanks $ ffrancs 2 Thunderbird 3 No Gnomes
Class2 ECHO 1 Yanks $ ffrancs 2 No Gnomes 3 Thunderbird
Class3 IRC 1 Wot Like 2 Woody 3 Jay
Class3 ECHO 1 Whyte Knight 2 Jay 3 Wot Like
Class 4 IRC 1 Granny Knot 2 Gaelic Kiwi
Class 4 ECHO 1 Granny Knot 2 Thistle 3 Gaelic Kiwi
It was a long tiring weekend for the competitors and we'd like to thank everyone who took part and kept going under very trying conditions.

We'd also like to thank everyone involved in supporting Cove SC to organize and host this event.

2010 Cobh/Blackrock Race -Saturday 4th September- Update
This year to help celebrate the Cork Harbour Open Day which is taking place on the same day, Cove Sailing Club and all competitors in the Cobh Blackrock race have been invited by the Port of Cork to berth at the new City Quays pontoon.
Any boats taking part in the race can berth overnight at the City Quay pontoon free of charge.
Cove Sailing Club will hold the prize giving at The Boardwalk restaurant on Lapps Quay (just opposite the pontoon) during the afternoon with The Boardwalk providing a barbecue for competitors (priced about €10) or their usual menu will be available inside. There is a great pedestrian area along Lapps Quay (hence the name of the restaurant) so we are hoping this will provide a welcome change and make it easier for families who may want to come out and enjoy the afternoon.
Additionally all crews staying overnight on the City pontoon can avail themselves of showers (€5) and/or breakfast (€10) at the Clarion Hotel (next to The Boardwalk) the next morning. These are available at preferential rates for competitors staying overnight on the pontoon only. We've been advised by the Clarion that there are also a few number of rooms still available and if anyone is interested they should contact the Clarion Hotel (021 422 4942) for details. It is very busy that weekend so if you are interested please let them know quickly.

ISA Training Centre
Over the winter a numbers of members of the junior committee undertook the ISA Instructor training course; this involved each person being trained in First Aid, Rescue boat techniques, VHF operations and Dinghy Instructor training. 5 of the members were awarded the qualifications and this set the ball rolling for ISA recognition.
With the help of all committee members we worked through the recognition requirements and had our inspection in May. We are delighted to say that we have been successful and are now a recognised teaching establishment. Click here for more....

Junior Sailing 10th July 2010
This Saturday was one of the most challenging days so far for the Junior sailors .
Despite the windy conditions and the pelting rain the Juniors gladly took to the water .
The first two sessions before lunch were windy and rainy but the wind picked up after lunch and the sailors were forced to reef their main sail , this didn't stop them from having fun , some of the Juniors played a game of catch while others played "follow the leader" .
The sailing club are also delighted to have 6 new RS Feva and 6 Optimists joining their ever expanding fleet of dinghy's .

RNLI Safety Day May 22nd 2010
Hosted by Jon Mathers RNLI Sea Safety Officer
- with the assistance of Damien Ahern, Mr Turbidy & the Crosshaven RNLI crew. Another successful and informative RNLI Sea Safety day was held at the Marlogue marina,
With the kind permission of George Butler.
On a glorious May Saturday morning the day kicked off with a life jacket awareness and information session by Jon Mathers. This was followed by various MOB Recovery methods using Damien's ’re-eile’ moored fore & aft in the marina ’basin’. Thanks to Richie of the RNLI boat crew for ‘volunteering’ as the casualty.
The recovery methods included -
Using the main halyard, using a for and aft line, main boom with ‘handy billy’ or main sheet and Baltic recovery sling. For all to see and realize the planning, practice and awareness of the various methods of recovery is always a real eye opener.
Thanks again to Damien for the use of ‘Re-Eile’.
The lifeboat crew then gave a Demo of recovering a crew member using the RNLI Rib and setting of a ‘day/night flare.
Next on the menu was a very interesting insight of the ’make up’ and inventory of the RNLI rib. The day finished with boat Sea checks for those interested. The day’s ‘De-brief’ and refreshments were held again in the ‘ideal ic’ setting of the Marlogue inn.
Cove Sailing Club wishes to thank Jon Mathers and the RNLI crew for another invaluable day of learning and awareness.

Junior Sailing Blog
The Juniors were back again this Saturday for another morning of sailing. Although the wind was much stronger than last week they still had a great time zipping around in the Topaz' and Toppers. Emma - "This week was great ! There was plenty of wind so we could go even faster than last week. I learned how to rig a boat , tie a figure of eight knot and how to use the tiller ! I'm learning more and more every week ! We capsized alot and at one stage I fell out of the boat and left my sailing partner Freya alone on the boat ! Cant wait for next Saturday "

1st Junior Sailing Day 1st May 2010
The Dinghy park was packed with excitement bright and early on Saturday the 1st of May . Instructors were busy rigging the boats and Brenda , Marina , Dorothy and Leanne were busy getting every thing organized for the day ahead. All the Juniors were excited to get back on the water ! There were plenty of new faces in the club.
The Juniors were lucky with such nice weather ! There was even the right amount of wind for some of the beginners.
I interviewed a few of the Juniors and asked how they got on.
Ryan Hickey: I had great fun ! Even though i did capsize a few times ! My favorite game was the buoy game where we had to pass the buoy to another boat !I'm definitely going to go next week ! My instructor is John , he is a legend !
Gearóid: I was really excited to get back on the water ! Luckily i didn't capsize. My instructor was Pat he is really good at teaching us how to sail. My favorite game was tip chase ! Cant wait for next week !
Sarah and Kate: We capsized a lot. It was lots of fun. Our favorite part was the race.
Lola: I had so much fun racing , Mike was my instructor , we nearly forgot to put the bung on our boat! I came last in the race but I still enjoyed myself !
The Juniors had great fun and couldn't wait to get back on the water !

2010 Membership fees are now due!
Firstly, thank you to those members who have renewed their membership for 2010.
All other CSC members are reminded that their 2010 fees are now due. The Friday Night League starts on April 30 with the Titanic Race (we can't wait) and we really need all outstanding fees to be paid before the start of the season. Late fees put a huge strain on our club and affects not only our cash flow, budgeting, and delays the acquisition of important equipment that the club needs at the start of the season but also means the CSC Committee have to spend time chasing up members, processing payments and renewing memberships at a time when they really need to be concentrating on organizing the start of our sailing season.
Please download your renewal forms here and send CSC your payment as soon as possible. Skippers please encourage all your regular crew to join CSC if they are not already members.

SailCork can provide both the National Powerboat Course over 2 days and a one day Direct Assessment for your boat drivers. The direct assessment is for experienced boat drivers only.
We follow ISA guidelines in providing these assessments and the details are as follows:
Direct Assessment for experienced skippers :
For those with a lot of power boating experience this certificate can also be achieved through direct assessment. This is only for those with significant boating experience. Normally this would be a minimum of at least one full years experience helming powerboats. The assessment will include all elements of the syllabus of the National Powerboat Course. There will be an assessment of all elements of background knowledge in the syllabus - this will be conducted orally on a one to one basis and with a written assessment paper.
The boat handling skills assessment afloat will include: Start + Stop engine. Coming alongside (Both against and with tide/wind), securing and departing. Securing to buoy (mooring) and anchoring. Turning in confined space. Holding off. Figure of 8 ahead and astern. MOB recovery. Planking exercises - S + U turns.
Candidates who wish to undertake a direct assessment must provide details of their previous experience. The best way to present this is by filling in full details of their experience in the Personal Log section of the ISA Powerboat Logbook. This includes details of dates, types of boat, power units (engines), type of activity and details of passages, weather and distances covered. The logbook is available from SailCork.
The above details are available on the following link to the powerboat syllabus: http://www.sailcork.com/index.php/power boating/power boating-adult-syllabus
Other details on all Powerboat Courses are available on our Powerboat Page:
http://www.sailcork.com/index.php/power boating/power boating-adult
We can provide a direct assessment over a mutually agreed day: 10:00 - 17:00 at a special price of €170 per person on our own boats or if you bring the CSC Rib €330 per boat (3 persons per boat) ie €110 per person if there are 3 or €165 if there are 2 etc.
If you want us to run a National Powerboat Course specially for the club we can organize that too - we can reduce the price for CSC if we have numbers.
We will be running a Safety Boat Course on Dec 12+13 and again we can do a special price for CSC.
If you are interested in any of the above please contact us at info@covesailingclub.ie

2009 has been a fantastic year for CSC and as the season draws to a close we would like to make sure that everyone is invited to enjoy a great night of food and entertainment otherwise known as the annual Laying-Up Supper.
We are working to finalize the arrangements and at this stage it would be helpful to get an idea of numbers and any preferences for venue. It is likely to be mid-end November in Cobh. Format will be similar to previous years - 3 course meal, tea/coffee, followed by short but entertaining speeches, prize giving, draw, and live music etc.... Cost is likely to be around the €50 a head.
It would be helpful to get an idea of numbers and any suggestions for venue/entertainment on the night so if you are intending to come please add your name to this thread together with any helpful ideas/comments. Thank you.

Cobh Hero Returns
OSTAR 2009 Class winner, Barry Hurley and "Dinah" arrived off Roche's Point, with unnerving punctuality, at 1PM on Sunday 2nd August. They were met at Roche's Point and escorted back to Cobh by a flotilla of boats from all over the harbor that had come out to welcome them home. It was great to see so many and such variety of boats out to meet them with many flying flags and bunting to add to the occasion.
It would have been a fine sight from the shore, as Dinah, flanked both sides by Cork Harbor Pilot boats, a Naval Service Rib, a Marine Transport vessel carrying Barry's Family and friends and followed by an assortment of yachts, motor boats, fishing boats and ribs made their way along the Cobh Road. Barry Dorgan, sailing on John Doyle's new boat, and carrying the Cove Sailing Club canon, fired several shots at Dinah as they passed the "Holy Ground" to signify the end of his fantastic journey. Barry later said that he was delighted by this - once he realized he wasn't about to be boarded. John and Barry have promised to return the canon before they come out racing with us on Friday and not try to use it to scare off the rest of the fleet.
Barry then tied up at The Quays in Cobh to be welcomed by his family and friends. The Choir of the Commodore sang "The Holy Ground" and then Barry and his family were given a Civic Reception by Cobh Town Council. The Mayor of Cobh presented Barry with a book of paintings of Cork Harbor and a special print by Mary McCaffrey from Cobh and Harbor Chamber.
Later that evening, Cove Sailing Club hosted Barry, his family and friends at the Marlogue Inn. Cove Sailing Club Commodore Dave Doyle spoke about some of Barry's earlier exploits as a promising dinghy sailor at the club and presented Barry with his certificate of Honorary Life Membership and a statue of "Annie Moore", as recognition of a fantastic achievement by a former Junior member of our club. Mr & Mrs Hurley were also presented with a framed Cove Sailing Club burgee to commemorate the occasion.
Barry then made an excellent acceptance speech and was clearly delighted by the whole day. In particular he mentioned that in all the years growing up and sailing round Cork Harbor and even as he sailed in bigger and bigger events farther afield he never dreamed that one day he would sail back into Cobh escorted by the Cork Pilots, the Navy, and all the other boats that came out to greet him. That would be something he would never forget.
I'm pretty sure that those of us who were out there on Sunday felt the same and it really was a great day for Cove Sailing Club. I do think there are one or two more adventures left in Barry Hurley and his exploits may inspire some of our current Juniors (and older dreamers) to go out and complete their own adventures so hopefully we may have a few more great days to come.
Cove Sailing Club would like to thank everyone involved who helped to make this a very special day and give a particular mention to the Naval Service, the Cork Pilots, Marine Transport, The Quays, The Marlogue Inn, Christy's, Laser Print Services, Fast Frame, CH Marine and everyone who came out on the day and helped us celebrate a great achievement by a Cobh Sailor. We've put photos up on our website of as many of the boats as we could get. Please feel free to contact us if you would like any of the pictures emailed out to you.
